Next week New York City will host the 58th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). We are pleased and honored to participate, with our Vice-President of Operations, Melanie Raffle, attending the session. Our status as an ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organization has allowed us to be a part of the many great movements and programs the United Nations
Since its inception in 1946, the CSW has steadily increased the awareness of women’s issues around the world. One of its first tasks was to change the language in various articles to be gender-inclusive (such as, removing “men” as a synonym for humanity). From there the commission has tackled issues of discrimination, women’s involvement in global development, marriage consent, exposing violence against women, and more.
This year’s theme is: Access and participation of women and girls to education, training, science and technology, including for the promotion of women’s equal access to full employment and decent work – See more at: http://www.unwomen.org. We are so proud to be a part of this year’s commission. We hope to learn more about the issues women and girls in the world are facing, as well as what is being done to improve the circumstances. With this knowledge we can move forward as our own outreach programs expand and offer more young women in the world the chance to experience education and sport. By empowering women, we empower mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, friends, and thus — humanity as a whole.
